Google Inc. Awards Major Grant
to Global Strategies for HIV Prevention
SAN RAFAEL, California - December 15, 2010 - Google Inc. has awarded a landmark grant to Global Strategies for HIV Prevention for their groundbreaking work saving the lives of women and children through HIV prevention and treatment in the world’s poorest and most dangerous regions. The award recognizes their many years of service providing HIV testing, treatment, and care despite extreme adversity in conflict and post-conflict regions.
The grant is one of several awards being given to charitable organizations out of the Google Inc. $20 million holiday gift to thank their business partners for continued business and support. Google’s founders set a target of giving approximately 1% of Google's equity and profits to make the world a better place. Google will exceed that target this year with charitable giving of over $140 million.
“These funds meet urgent needs in HIV affected populations that have been long neglected because of lack of resources,” said Dr. Arthur J. Ammann, Global Strategies’ Co-Founder and President. “We hope this historic donation from Google Inc. will encourage others to consider how they too can prevent the unrestrained spread of HIV and mitigate its consequences in the face of poverty and political obstacles.”
Dr. David Ho, Scientific Director and CEO of the Aaron Diamond AIDS Research Center and a Global Strategies Advisory Board member stated, "At ADARC we are committed to finding scientific solutions to end the AIDS epidemic and working with foundations such as Global Strategies to apply them to resource poor regions of the world. The Google Inc. grant will provide the much needed support to bring these advances to previously neglected areas."
Global Strategies for HIV Prevention is currently focused on synergistic programs in Democratic Republic of Congo and Liberia to fight HIV/AIDS, including education and training for healthcare workers. “This funding will strengthen our existing programs, and allow us to establish our model of HIV/AIDS healthcare delivery in other regions,” said Elizabeth Lincoln, Executive Director of Global Strategies for HIV Prevention. “The award is a powerful recognition that our work with the world’s marginalized populations over the last twelve years has, and will continue, to save lives.” The award will accelerate the implementation of innovative mobile health technologies to improve the efficiency of HIV prevention and supply chain and patient management.
In 2006 Global Strategies co-founded the first pediatric HIV program and prevention of mother to child
HIV treatment programs (PMTCT) in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo, where they also provide post-
exposure prophylaxis medical kits as part of healthcare for rape victims to prevent HIV, sexually transmitted and opportunistic infections. Global Strategies and its Liberian partners provide a comprehensive PMTCT and a pediatric program to provide treatment, nutrition and care for HIV infected children. The award from Google Inc. will support Global Strategies’ current programs, providing necessary funding to continue their lifesaving work and new opportunities to expand.
